Call for Micro Commission Participants

Freelancers in the Dark are holding a series of six micro-commissions across the UK that ask theatre makers to create a short creative response to their experience of the Covid-19 pandemic and the challenges they’ve faced as theatre freelancers.

These commissions look to include a crucial creative voice within our project, providing us with vital data and perspectives from freelancers.

We are looking for participants for our final micro commission in the North East:

  • Newcastle-upon-Tyne, virtual workshop on Monday 8th November, in-person sessions on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th November (postponed from Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th October)
    • Giving voice or Identity

We have now found brilliant participants for two-day micro-commissions in the following locations, and look forward to sharing our reflections from –

  • London, Thursday 7th and Friday 8th October
    • Transformation or Advocacy
  • Plymouth, Thursday 14th and Friday 15th October
    • Giving voice or Identity
  • Birmingham, Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd October
    • Empowerment or Collaboration
  • Edinburgh, Thursday 28th and Friday 29th October
    • Empowerment or Collaboration
  • Cardiff, Thursday 4th and Friday 5th November (postponed from 19th-20th October)
    • Transformation or Advocacy

In addition to the full day workshops, there will also be an additional 3 hour Zoom workshop in advance for participants to start planning their piece.

We’re looking for either individuals or groups of up to 4 participants with experience as freelancers in UK theatre, who can creatively approach the proposed themes, to consider issues involving how your practice and ways of working have changed in the last 18 months and what your hopes are for the future of the UK theatre industry. We will be most interested in the process of development rather than the finished piece.

The Micro Commission pays £450 per participant.

If you are a theatre freelancer or a small group of up to 4 creative theatre makers we’d love to hear from you.

To apply please respond with a short statement or pitch to reflect on why you are interested in this project and what you would be inspired by from the project, along with your CV. Please send these in to us at iawscovid-19@essex.ac.uk or contact us if you have any questions.

We will use the micro commissions for the Freelancers in the Dark project including as part of our research and our showcases, but your work from the commission will belong to you and can be used after the project as you wish. We will document the workshop days with film and photography, in particular filming parts of the process of the micro commission, and the final piece. The recording will be for our research purposes, including potential use on our website, social media, and in end of project events.

Full information for participants, including on how data will be used, stored, shared and deleted, is available here.
